Santurtzi has an intense past, the same as its rich etymology. Its antiquity has allowed the evolution ot its names: Sancti Georgis, sant Yurdie, Santuye or Santurce. This reveals that its origin is around Saint George Church There is information written about this church since the XIth century. Santurtzi took part with San Salvador del Valle and Sestao of the three slices of the Somorrostro´s valley. At that time Santurtzi was a fishermen land, a sailor personality that is part of its essence and will go with it for ever.

In the middles of the XIX century with the river Nervión industrialization, started the big economic, cultural and social growth. a transformation that went faster with the construction of the port El Abra and what it supposed to the village. Santurtzi went from being a fisher village to be a portuary zone, with a high traffic of goods and travelers.

Now the village is being modified from industry to tourism under the influence of Bilbao. The park is getting bigger providing to the new placement of the railway station. The port is getting better and many other constructions that will give to the visitors the sensation of being in a pretty touristy zone.
